TUPLEO–Ripley’s Laquita Wilkerson was named Grand Champion and first-ever Spirit of Dance plaque, at the eighth annual Boys and Girls Clubs of North Mississippi’s annual Dance Like The Stars event. She raised $46,462, more than any other community under the youth-serving organizations umbrella.
Wilkerson danced for the Ripley Boys & Girls Club is housed inside Ripley Elementary School. Clubs are also located in New Albany and Tupelo.
“I don’t know what to say. I really don’t. It’s awesome. It’s awesome for Ripley. I’m just so excited that Ripley has got this. And it’s for the Boys and Girls Club,” said Wilkerson, who helped raise a record $244,601 for the event.
Evie Boyd, marketing director for Boys and Girls Clubs of North Mississippi noted that last year’s event had an attendance of 850 and totaled $176,000 in fundraising. This year, 1,200 supporters and ballroom dancing fans turned out.
As for the dancing, Wilkerson performed a fast-paced, spinning routine in a flowing pink dress with Tupelo Dance Studio instructor Robbie Greenwood. She said it wasn’t easy, but she enjoyed every minute of it.
“It was hard. It was a very big challenge for me, but I loved it,” she added.
